Project Overview

The Challenge:

To combine remote work with immersive homeschooling and cultural exploration across the Yucatan Peninsula, while enriching our family's understanding of Mayan history and contemporary Mexican culture. Learning Spanish on the fly and navigating a foreign space.

The Process:

Over a month, we journeyed from Cancun to Isla Mujeres, through Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Akumal, and Tulum. The adventure was planned and managed down to travel times to balance my remote work with the children's education, using co-working spaces and the rich tapestry of the Yucatan as our classroom.

Prior to the trip, the children engaged in a month-long study of Mayan culture, which was then brought to life through visits to significant historical sites, such as Chichen Itza and the Tulum ruins.
Swimming with sea turtles in Akumal and snorkeling the Mesoamerican Reef provided hands-on learning about marine biology and environmental conservation.

Remote Work Integration:

I maintained professional momentum by leveraging co-working spaces throughout our travels, exemplifying the viability of remote work in dynamic settings.
This journey served as a live case study in work-life integration, demonstrating how remote work can facilitate educational travel and family bonding.

Playa Del Carmen; Two weeks in Playa Del Carmen in the low season was a shock. The sun, the humidity, and even the language was different than anywhere else we'd been in the world.
